What the results can and cannot tell you.

Results are for information only

Everything the tools produce — counts, estimates, converted text, comparisons — is provided for general information. It is not a certified measurement, and it is not a substitute for the requirements of whoever will receive your work. When a submission has a hard limit, check the count in the system that will enforce it.

Not professional advice

Nothing on this site is legal, medical, financial or academic advice. The privacy policy and terms of use are templates that describe how this site works; they are not advice for your own site or situation. If you need advice, consult a qualified professional in the relevant field.

Limits of text analysis

Automatic text analysis in English is approximate by nature:

  • Sentence detection relies on punctuation and a list of common abbreviations. Unusual abbreviations, initials and quoted dialogue can shift the count.
  • Word counts depend on the definition of a word. Ours is documented on the methodology page and may differ from your word processor by a small margin.
  • Reading and speaking estimates apply an average rate. Individual speed varies by a factor of two or more depending on the reader and the material.
  • Title case rules summarize published style guides. Style guides contain exceptions and editorial judgment that no automatic converter resolves; treat the output as a first pass to be reviewed.
  • Word and phrase frequency describes the distribution of terms in a text. It does not measure quality, readability or search performance, and no tool on this site can predict or guarantee search rankings.

External links

Some pages link to other websites for reference. We do not control those sites, do not endorse everything on them, and are not responsible for their content or availability.

Advertising

Advertisements shown on this site are supplied by third-party networks. Their presence is not an endorsement of the advertiser, its products or its claims. Ad slots are labeled and are kept out of the tool's controls.

Data loss

Because your text lives only in your browser tab, closing the tab, reloading the page or crashing the browser will lose it. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to retype. The optional autosave switch stores text in your browser's local storage only, which is not a backup.
